Protocols settings

You can change the settings for all mail protocols supported by the mail server.

Enable

You can turn support for specific mail protocols on and off. When a protocol is on, your mail server can send mail to and receive mail from e-mail applications that use the protocol.

Response Name

The response name is the domain name your server sends to the server that's contacted it when a network operation involving a protocol takes place. Changing this name may help limit unsolicited mail.

Port Number

You don't need to change port numbers unless you plan to use mail services over nonstandard ports.

Supported protocols

You can provide mail service via several mail protocols (rules that determine how mail is transferred). The ones you use depend on your users' mail applications. The AppleShare IP mail server supports several industry-standard mail protocols and conventions. This table shows the differences between the protocols:
      SMTP   IMAP   POP
Sends and receives mail to and from other SMTP servers Receives mail only (use SMTP for sending) Receives mail only (use SMTP for sending)

Disconnects after transfer Maintains open connection Disconnects after transfer

Accepts incoming mail and relays outgoing mail. Keeps mail on server Downloads mail to user's computer

The mail server also supports the following specialized protocols:
IMAP Administrator Access: A variation of IMAP that offers additional mail administrator privileges by connecting to the mail server over software port 626, using any standard IMAP client application. (Port 626 has been officially reserved for Apple Computer to provide this feature.)
To use this protocol, you need to turn it on and configure your IMAP client software to support nested folders and switching to a different port.
PASS: Allows changing mail passwords (if the mail application supports it).
FINGER: Allows a mail application to look up user names and e-mail addresses.
NotifyMail: Informs a user that mail has arrived.
